25 MVA mine distribution package, issued through a reset.

How a remote iron-ore operation rebuilt its 132/11 kV substation and switchgear documentation after a project reset compressed the drawing schedule.

Project Snapshot

Client: remote Australian iron-ore operation, anonymized. Scope: 132/11 kV substation documentation, 25 MVA transformer, 11 kV switchgear, hoist winder, crusher, SAG mill, ventilation and process plant MCCs, with MicroStation-standard drawing handover. Result: 48 sheets, two weeks ahead of the reset schedule.

Client type

A remote iron-ore mining operation in Australia's Pilbara, fed at 132 kV, with a process plant built around large mining loads: a hoist winder, crushers, a SAG mill, ventilation fans and process plant motor control centres. The client's electrical lead owned design decisions and review; Advanced Mechanix supplied the drawing production. The operation is not named because the work was delivered under NDA.

Scope

The engagement covered the full power-distribution documentation set for the site, from the 132 kV incoming supply down to the process loads:

  • The 132/11 kV substation single-line diagram and the 25 MVA transformer.
  • 11 kV distribution switchgear and the feeder schedule.
  • MCC documentation for the hoist winder, crusher, SAG mill, ventilation and process plant loads.
  • A drawing handover in the client's MicroStation standard, as source files and PDFs.

Constraints

The project was already in the field when its document control baseline was reset. Vendor packages had moved faster than the client's drawings, several loads had been reclassified, and operations needed a reliable issued-for-construction set before the next shutdown package. The reset compressed the drawing schedule by four weeks, which left no room for a traditional local drafting queue: the drawings had to be rebuilt while the site kept running and the shutdown date stayed fixed.

Standards

All sheets were produced in MicroStation to the client's own title-block and layer standards, so the package dropped straight into the site drawing register. The single-line and feeder schedule were rebuilt from vendor data and field mark-ups rather than from the superseded drawings, and every major load was mapped to its switchgear, protection references and drawing numbers so the set could be checked end to end.

Deliverables

  • Rebuilt 132/11 kV single-line diagram and feeder schedule.
  • HV, MV and process-load sheets separated so review responsibility was clear.
  • A load map tying every major load to its switchgear, protection references and drawing numbers.
  • Rolling review packs for the client's electrical lead.
  • MicroStation source files and PDFs aligned to the client's title-block and layer standards — 48 drawing sheets in total.

Timeline

Work ran against a schedule that the project reset had already compressed by four weeks. Instead of one large issue at the end, the package went out as rolling review packs: the client's electrical lead could clear the HV, MV and process-load sections in turn while production continued on the rest. The final package was issued two weeks ahead of the reset schedule, in time to support shutdown planning.

Outcome

The final package supported shutdown planning without further drawing delay, and no field modifications were traced back to the documentation. More importantly, operations received a maintainable documentation baseline for future protection updates, load additions and incident-energy reviews.

Why it mattered

Mine power systems accumulate operational changes quickly. If the single-line and feeder schedules lag the plant, every shutdown becomes a documentation exercise. The value of this engagement was not only getting 48 sheets out the door; it was giving the site a power-distribution record that operations, maintenance and engineering could trust again.
